A Building Permit is required for any construction, reconstruction, alteration, addition, repair, demolition, relocation or removal of any building or structure. A permit is also required for the installation, alteration, or repair of plumbing.
Building Permits ARE REQUIRED when you:

  • Construct a new home
  • Construct a new accessory building or structure
  • Renovate or add to an existing building
  • Construct, remove or relocate interior walls
  • Reconstruct or alter the building envelope
  • Construct a retaining wall over 1.2 m (4ft) in height
  • Construct or alter the use of a garage
  • Construct, cover or enclose a porch or sun deck
  • Demolish or relocate a building
  • Change the use (Occupancy) of a building

Building Permits are NOT Required

Building Permits ARE NOT REQUIRED for non-structural minor modifications, decorating and maintenance including, but not limited to:

  • Painting
  • Cupboards
  • Floor coverings (re-carpet, hardwood flooring, tiling)
  • (Most) Roof repairs or re-roofing
  • General maintenance - exterior and interior
  • Landscaping, fences, sheds under 10 m.sq. (107 sq.ft.)
