District of Squamish Hires Economic Sustainability Coordinator

The District of Squamish is pleased to announce that Dan McRae has been hired as the new Economic Sustainability Coordinator.

The Economic Sustainability Coordinator position was introduced in the 2011 budget in response to recommendations made in the 2011-2015 Economic Development Strategic Plan. This plan endorsed by Council and by the Economic Development Committee (Susan Chapelle, Michael Hutchison Ron Anderson, Councillor Paul Lalli, Mayor Greg Gardner, Councillor Rob Kirkham), includes a three phased approach to enhance economic development in Squamish.

The Economic Sustainability Coordinator reports to the General Manager of Community Services with a portfolio that includes:

• Completing the objectives as described in the Strategic Plan entitled the Outline of Economic Development Activities 2011-2015 report.

• Facilitating business development and identifying and fostering business development opportunities, assisting local organizations, and promoting the community in order to expand trade and investment opportunities.

•Collaborating with local business organizations including the Downtown Squamish Business Improvement Association, the Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Squamish and others to enhance capacity within respective scopes of work and capitalize on major events in the community.

Council is pleased to add this position to the District organization and we believe Mr. McRae will be an asset to our organization and a benefit to our community,” continued Gardner.

Many studies have shown that the majority of a community's job growth is derived from existing businesses, so I am excited about a mandate to focus on a business retention and expansion program, said Dan McRae," Economic Sustainability Coordinator.

Mr. McRae brings many years of local business and community development experience to the District. His experience includes assisting small businesses, owning his own small businesses, working with local business associations, securing grant funding, and managing community economic development projects on behalf of the District. In addition to his experience, McRae has a achieved a Bachelor of Commerce in Entrepreneurial Management, a diploma in Marketing Management and Real Estate Studies and is finishing his certification in Project Management.
