Donations for Displaced Families

Dec 16th '09

Appeal for Donations to Help Displaced Residents of the Townhouse Complex Fire on December 13, 2009.

On December 13 a fire destroyed an eight-unit townhouse in Garibaldi Estates leaving 8 families displaced 12 days before Christmas.

The District of Squamish’s Emergency Social Services program is providing support services to the families and assisting with their short-term and long-term needs of the families.

Short-term needs have been identified by creating family “wish lists” of much-needed items required for the families to start rebuilding their lives.

“The District has set up a program with the help from “Project Love” that matches the needs of the displaced families and the donations from the community. Once a match for an item has been made the item will be taken off the list and therefore only being donated once,” said Jim Lang, Squamish Emergency Coordinator.

The community can help with donations by:
1. Viewing the “wish list” at www.squamish.ca
2. Donors then select the item(s) to be donated in the check boxes provided.
3. Donors package the items and label the package identifying the family receiving
    the donation.
4. Donations can be dropped off at The Project Love Centre at 38054 Second
    Avenue daily from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and again from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

The Squamish Emergency Program Society has also set up a Fire Fund account at Squamish Saving (branch 81, account #331918) and is currently accepting cash donations. Gift card donations from local businesses can be dropped off at the Municipal Hall Reception located at 37955 Second Avenue.

Emergency Social Services is an emergency response program made up of individuals who share a common goal of assisting people in an emergency.
