Exercise Pegasus Guardian 3 / Spartan Rings

Oct 21st '09

In preparation for the 2010 Winter Games, the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit is exercising and testing their security plans.  Exercise Pegasus Guardian 3 and Spartan Rings are police and Canadian Forces focused exercises that are taking place during the week of October 19 – 23rd to test communications, security plans and to validate protocols and procedures.  They are full-scale exercises.

The scenarios have been developed during previous exercises, including
Exercise Pegasus Guardian 2 and Exercise Silver in February, 2009, and
are designed to test security forces for potential threats during the
2010 Winter Games.

To ensure that the exercises are realistic, a number of “live assets”,
including police and Canadian Forces vessels, aircraft and personnel
will be deployed.  There will be increased activities in the Burrard
Inlet, False Creek, along the coast line and the Sea to Sky corridor.
The Squamish Airport is the base for activities in the Sea to Sky
corridor.  The Integrated Security Unit ensures that these events will
be tightly controlled and will follow the guiding principles of safety
and security for all exercise participants as well as the public.
There will be increased air traffic during this time.

The Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit and its key security
partners are confident they will be prepared for the final confirmation
exercise – Exercise Gold.  This exercise will take place during the
week of November 2 – 6th and will finalize and confirm security plans.

The Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit held a media briefing on
October 13, 2009 to provide an overview of the exercise plans for
Pegasus Guardian 3 and Spartan Rings.  The following links include
statements from the Assistant Commissioner Bud Mercer, Chief Operating
Officer, V2010 ISU and Rear-Admiral Tyrone Pile, Commander Joint Task
Force Games.
