The District of Squamish congratulates the community of Squamish on reducing household garbage to the landfill by 20% in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter in 2008. The report signifies the success of the curbside recycling program since its inception in January 2009.
“This is a step in the right direction and as move forward we can continue to reduce the volume even further,” said Mayor Greg Gardner. “It is not only environmentally sound to reduce garbage to the landfill, but it is also a cost savings measure to the community.”
The District of Squamish implemented the biweekly recycling/garbage collection in January 2009. Since the change, the total tonnage for the first quarter is down from 799,789 kg. to 641,210 kg compared to last year. This reduction has occurred even with an increase of 98 residences or a 2% rise in residency. The reduction of household garbage to the landfill on a per unit basis reduced from 147 kg/unit in 2008 to 116 kg/unit in 2009 equaling a 21% drop.
