Sep 14th '09

The District of Squamish and Bear Aware invite the community to join them at the second annual Bear Awareness Community Event on September 19, 2009 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Squamish Adventure Centre. This is a fun, family- friendly community event to learn about Squamish’s unique natural setting and its inhabitants: black bears/wildlife and the programs that are in place. Come out and meet the different organizations that work together for our environment within our community.

“This event encourages both resident and visitor to connect with nature and will help to foster sustainable behaviour,” said Mayor Greg Gardner. “Learn about the progress the District of Squamish has made towards becoming a Bear Smart Community and talk with community groups and organizations about their involvement with and promotion of environmental awareness within the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada,” continued Gardner.

Event Highlights:

Slide Show with Michael Allen - photographer and researcher Michael Allen will illustrate the foraging behaviors and relationships between weight gain, berries, and cubs amongst the longest studied black bear population at Whistler.

Kids – will enjoy making crafts, playing in the bouncy castle, listening to bear stories and having a chance to win great prizes.

The Passport to Learning – Receive a Passport to Learning when you arrive and as you visit each community booth get a stamp on your passport; once you have completed your passport, enter it to win a great gift basket.
