2031 Multi-Modal Transportation Study
The District of Squamish announced at the June 15, 2010 Council meeting that it is launching a 2031 Multi-Modal Transportation Plan Study and looking for public input to help define Squamish’s Long Term Transportation Objectives. The study will result in a plan that is both visionary and strategic that balances the community’s aspirations with its physical and fiscal constraints. The Study will take approximately 12 months to complete and will deliver a plan that includes all modes of transportation up to the year 2031and beyond.
“Squamish has grown immensely over the last number of years and the planning framework has evolved as well with processes such as “smart growth on the ground”, the Oceanfront and Downtown community planning and the Official Community Plan. Now is the time to create a plan for the future that connects all modes of transportation, is sustainable and best serves the residents of our community,” said Mayor Gardner.
The 2031 Multi-Modal Transportation Plan will be the overarching transportation policy document for the District of Squamish. It is a fundamental document supporting the long-term vision established by the new Official Community Plan (OCP). In addition, it will enable and inform several other policy and strategic initiatives including the amendment of the District's servicing standards, and Development Cost Charge Bylaw.
It is also the principal document that will inform strategic and fiscal planning with respect to future transportation infrastructure and the 20-year roads and capital plan. Roads, intersections, bridges and related property acquisitions are among the most expensive forms of infrastructure that the District is charged with delivering. The strategic and orderly application of the District's finite resources will depend on having a clear Transportation Plan that expresses the community's vision.
The District of Squamish will retain a transportation consultant to model network options and analyze traffic condition for various scenarios. Several opportunities have been planned for the public and stakeholders to inform the study and to provide their ideas for the best solution for Squamish transportation future. Squamish is a vibrant seaside community located in the Coast Mountain Range of British Columbia, at the head of Howe Sound. Home to more than 14, 949 people, Squamish is a young, energetic town with 60 per cent of the population under the age of 40. Squamish offers a high quality lifestyle, entrepreneurial opportunities, two universities and a community that prides itself as the “Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada.”
