SORCA Bike Skills Park celebrates grand opening Saturday

Join Mayor Kirkham and Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association (SORCA) President Jeff Cooke for the official ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion and opening of the new Mountain Bike Skills Park at Brennan Park Recreation Centre.

The ribbon cutting will take place Saturday, April 12th at 9 a.m., just prior to the start of SORCA's first Toonie ride of the season - the Toonie Social Ride.

An immense amount of hard work and volunteer time and energy has gone into the planning, building and shaping of this incredible new asset for Squamish. The ribbon cutting will provide an opportunity to thank the many builders and sponsors who have gone above and beyond to make this project a reality.

BACKGROUND: In June 2013 a lease agreement was signed between the District of Squamish and SORCA for the development of a new Mountain Bike Skills Park at Brennan Park Recreation Centre.

Off-road cycling is the number one recreation activity in Squamish, with 42% of residents participating in the sport. The quantity and quality of mountain bike trails in Squamish is world class and attracts large numbers of residents and visitors. Skill and endurance development is required before youth can really enjoy the extensive trail network safely. The Skills Park will provide youth the opportunity to improve their skills and ability in a safe environment.

Brennan Park is an ideal location for the park because it is a central hub for recreation in Squamish. The site allows for the use of current infrastructure that is already in place; washrooms, first aid and bear proof trash bins. The location for the new Skills Park is in close proximity to the BMX track and is at the centre of the current commuter trail network. The Skills Park provides an option for parents with children participating in multiple activities - while one child is participating in a form of sport or recreation, another could be riding at the Park. The park will also tie in with Brennan Park Recreation Centre programming and larger biking events like Test of Metal and BC Bike Race.
