Fire hazard returns to “Extreme” for the District of Squamish

SQUAMISH, BC – A return to extended sunny, dry weather has resulted in EXTREME fire hazard conditions throughout the District of Squamish, as specified by BC’s Wildfire Management Branch. September 12 marks the third day of such a rating, and as a result, all high-risk activities in and around forested areas must cease immediately until further notice. (There are currently no indications that a campfire ban will be reinstated).

Work plans involving high-risk activities such as using fire- or spark-producing tools, grinding, or mechanical land clearing must cease until further notice.

The public is advised to use caution when engaging in outdoor activities of all kind. Once started, fires have the potential to spread rapidly and can threaten property and life. Smoking is not permitted on trails, in parks and other public outdoor areas. Anyone who violates or commits an offence under the District Squamish Fire Service Bylaw can be liable on a summary conviction of a fine of up to $10,000.

The public is encouraged to call 911 immediately if they spot grass or bush fires, or if there appears to be an abandoned campfire. Every fire situation is a race against time.

“Quick action by the public ensures that emergency response teams can react swiftly to minimize the damage,” says Squamish Fire Rescue Chief Russ Inouye. “With the current dry conditions, a carelessly tossed cigarette, sparks from a chainsaw or a hot exhaust pipe coming into contact with grass all have the potential to start a wildfire. The “Extreme” fire hazard rating demands extreme caution.”
