Grizzly Bear Update

July 21 UPDATE: The Conservation Officer Service has captured, relocated and released the grizzly bear. Thank you to the public who called the COS hotline enabling the Conservation Officers to track and safely trap this bear. We appreciate your assistance with keeping our community safe and the wildlife wild.

Due to new grizzly bear sightings, WildSafeBC, in partnership with the District of Squamish and the Conservation Officer Service (COS), is re-issuing a grizzly bear alert.

The grizzly has been reported traveling between the area west of the Squamish airport, across Highway 99 and east toward the Mashiter Trail network. Signs will be posted at major trailhead junctions leading into the Mashiter Trail. Though there have been no recent sightings along the Ray Peter's trail network, signs will be posted as a precautionary measure.

The COS is monitoring the situation very closely and requests that all sightings or encounters are reported to the COS 24 hour hotline at: 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP).

As a reminder, Squamish is situated in wildlife country and we can expect to encounter various wildlife species while out enjoying the many trails. It is imperative that we all remain alert and aware and look for signs of wildlife activity i.e. scat, claw marks, food caches. Avoid surprise encounters by using your voice especially while running or biking quietly and quickly. If you do encounter wildlife, never run and never turn your back. For specific information on how to avoid encounters please check out the educational videos on the Wildlife pages of the District's website.
